Local Public and Private Partnership Delivers as Promised with Home Buyer Workshop.
On Saturday January 4th, 2020, Realinc’s Office of Jason T. Hyman launched their Lost Spaces Program in historic Third Ward with the inaugural Are You On Your Ship Home Buyer Workshop. Partnered with financial sponsor, Third Ward, CDC, Realinc owner, Jason Hyman tapped professionals from every aspect of the home buying process to speak to, consult with and service attendees. The sold out event, which had over 100 registrants, was free to the public but raised seed funds from attendees who connected with the mission of the Lost Spaces program. The mission to provide commercial and housing choices for everyone is designed to preserve community by empowering residents to participate in the development of it. After Jason Hyman, a realtor and planner, walked attendees through the home buying process and what to expect, they engaged with panelists for an hour of questions and answers, followed by an open full of resources from housing related vendors.Panelists included Fig Restoration board-certified credit repair specialist, Moncy Hawkins whose collaborative approach showcased responsible credit habits. Being a native, Houston Vintage Homes founder and designer Tyron McDaniels provided a solution driven perspective to Houston's housing dilemma. BBVA lending specialist, Darryl Bowles and award-winning realtor, Royce Isaac of the Rolls Royce Luxury Group were able to openly educate prospective buyers about preparation and decision making. The unsung value of inspections and thorough title research were highlighted by 20 year builder, turned inspector, Kevin Akins of Pillar to Post and 20 year title vet, Meka Dixon of Texas Title.By design, the event also created a platform for public and quasi-public organizations like the Houston Housing and Community Development Department, Houston Land Bank and the Houston Community Land Trust to engage with developers, lenders and realtors and exchange ideas. The newly-formed connections may result in additional affordable options and potential land-trust eligible homes in the Third Ward. The workshop presents economic and civic opportunities to local businesses and civic associations as well. Attendees left ready to explore the culture of the area upon leaving the park with information on how to engage areas they want to invest in like Third Ward.Attendee Steven Ivy shared, “One interesting thing I learned is the importance of sidewalks and street lights. If you’re investing in a home that doesn’t have that, invest in the community to get it.” Armed with newfound knowledge and a team of experts, attendees left ready to take ownership of their journey to home ownership and empowered to change their community.
